Oregon Zoo Foundation

Gratitude Reports

Each year, Oregon Zoo Foundation publishes a report showcasing the Foundation’s work and use of funds.

Ocelot worked with the Oregon Zoo Foundation’s Communications team to design and produce the 2022 and 2023 Gratitude Reports. It was a challenge to weave together the Foundation’s conservation work at home and abroad, the impact on animals at the Oregon Zoo, and how the community benefits from this work. The story was told through photography, original illustrations, and infographics.

Project goals

Ocelot was a partner from the beginning conceptual stages through the final mailing process. Understanding of the client’s work gained through a longstanding design relationship, allowed full participation. Brainstorming content themes, determining story length, pacing, order, and how best to visually support each story while reinforcing how all the content was interconnected.

Options for print and mailing formats were researched and presented to the client, with budget in mind.

The design adhered to the Foundation’s branding guidelines were used, creating consistency with other print pieces produced throughout the year.

BRANDING

The Oregon Zoo Foundation is a separate entity from the Oregon Zoo, although they work closely and share nearly identical branding. The role and importance of the Foundation needed to be clearly defined for readers.

The Reports

The 2022 cover shows the rainforest of Borneo above a baby orangutan at the Oregon Zoo.

The concept was the story of a fullday in Borneo alongside a day at the Zoo, and the connections between both places.

Infographic spreads show the statistics of a single day at the Oregon Zoo. This page also introduces the location of Sabah, with a photo of sunrise over the rainforest.

Simple maps were created, and placed in their respective story areasto give readers context for the locations described in the report.

Photos of elephants at the sanctuary in Borneo were shown side-by-side with photos of Samudra at the Oregon Zoo.

Photography was featured to show the beauty and power of the animals at the Oregon Zoo.

The 2021 cover features the lions rubbing heads, matching up well to the themes of Care and Connection. The photo is overlaid on an original drawing of a portion of the lion habitat.

“The pack impact” section features original illustrations alongside yearly statistics about the Oregon Zoo.

Original illustrations of bats were created for a sidebar, focusing on their physical features and unique abilities.

Graphs and tables were created in the brand style to show financial information.

Conclusion: Both reports were completed on time and at budget. Donors and board members gave a very positive response to both reports each year, and Ocelot is currently in conceptual stages with the client for the 2024 report.
